Aggregate Analysis Beyond Price: Glassnode Global Metrics
Crypto Insight Summary: Glassnode, with authors Frederik Theissen and Kilian Heeg, announced on May 28, 2026 the launch of "Global Metrics," a suite of continuous, rebalanced multi-asset indices designed for aggregate crypto market analysis beyond price. The new framework addresses structural discontinuities in raw aggregate metrics, where assets leaving a basket—such as small-caps crossing the $100M threshold and graduating to higher tiers—create artificial biases that obscure long-term trends. Four metrics (Total Market Cap, Median SOPR, Total Open Interest, and one additional metric) are available across four market-cap baskets: All Coins, Large Cap (≥$1B), Mid Cap ($100M–$1B), and Small Cap (<$100M), producing 16 time series total with weekly rebalancing and equal weighting. Each metric is published in two forms: raw aggregates preserving original units, and base-100 indices for trend and cross-basket comparison, both accessible via the Glassnode API. Application examples show that the small-cap index revealed a dramatic 2024 surge driven by memecoin mania that was largely invisible in raw data, while the SOPR index indicated that small-cap sentiment was more stable than the raw series suggested, which overstated bearishness by including assets that had already left the basket. The Open Interest index highlighted that mid- and small-cap leverage is far more volatile than large-cap positioning, spiking sharply during speculative episodes and serving as an early-warning signal for cascade risk. The framework also showed that large- and mid-cap holders extract slightly less profit per cycle, consistent with growing long-term supply locking.
