Washington man gets 5 years for helping $100 million crypto money laundering scheme
Crypto Insight Summary: Geoffrey K. Auyeung, a 47-year-old from Newcastle, Washington, was sentenced to five years in prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering in connection with a nearly $100 million crypto money laundering scheme. Between August 2022 and August 2024, Auyeung helped overseas fraudsters launder proceeds from investment scams that deceived victims into believing they were purchasing oil tank storage in the oil and gas industry. He established at least nine entities and opened 81 bank accounts at 24 financial institutions, as well as 19 accounts across 8 crypto exchanges including Gemini, Coinbase, and BitStamp, which collectively received $97.1 million in fraud proceeds. These funds were quickly transferred offshore or converted into bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, and USDC, with much of the cryptocurrency sent to Binance accounts controlled by individuals in Nigeria and Russia. Auyeung received at least $4 million in commission payments and continued the scheme through accounts in his wife's name even after his August 2024 indictment, earning an additional $400,000. He pleaded guilty in February 2026 and is forfeiting approximately $2.3 million in seized assets, an Audi SQ8, roughly $7.1 million in cryptocurrency, and $300,000 in bank accounts, while the government is seeking over $24 million in restitution. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd stated that Auyeung facilitated a fraud that stole investor money by lulling them with promises of legitimate escrow accounts.
