Blockchain researchers warn HTX sanctions may blur crypto risk signals
Crypto Insight Summary: Blockchain researchers including Galaxy Digital's head of research Alex Thorn, security researcher Taylor Monahan, and blockchain investigator ZachXBT have criticized the UK's May 26 sanctions against crypto exchange HTX and its parent company Huobi Global S.A. for allegedly supporting Russia-linked financial networks. The UK imposed sanctions citing reasonable grounds to suspect HTX facilitated funds for entities like A7 LLC and Garantex. Thorn described the broad tainting of "all of HTX" as problematic given its many legitimate users, while Monahan argued the move undermined years of work encouraging DeFi protocols to screen stolen funds. ZachXBT called the sanctions an overreach, stating that on-chain address tainting has been "catastrophic" and that he now ignores the sanctions category in tracing because "risk" has become meaningless. A Global Ledger report found HTX processed approximately $21.06 billion in high-risk crypto flows between 2021 and May 2026, with at least $7.64 billion linked to Russian high-risk entities and darknet markets including Garantex, Grinex, A7A5, and Hydra. HTX has denied the allegations, claiming the sanctioned entity is separate from the exchange. Downstream effects included Trump-linked DeFi project World Liberty Financial freezing HTX-linked addresses, prompting HTX to delist the platform's USD1 stablecoin. Crypto Insight Analysis: Direction: Bearish HTX Impact: Minor Impact Horizon: Short-term (1-3 days) Reasoning: Sanctions against HTX create uncertainty but limited broader market impact due to exchange's smaller scale.
