Mastercard Wins NY BitLicense, Deepening Push Into Stablecoin Settlement
Crypto Insight Summary: Mastercard secured a BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services, granted to its subsidiary Mastercard Transaction Services (U.S.) LLC and announced on May 27, 2026. The company, which processed nearly $11 trillion in payment volume in 2025, joins Circle, Coinbase, and Paxos among NYDFS-regulated digital asset operators and can now conduct virtual currency business with New York entities directly. The license comes as the stablecoin market reached $322.6 billion and 2025 transfer volumes exceeded $27.6 trillion, surpassing combined traditional volumes of Visa and Mastercard. Chief Product Officer Jorn Lambert said the approval reflects Mastercard's focus on aligning innovation with regulatory standards for security and compliance. The BitLicense builds on Mastercard's March partnership with SoFi Technologies to enable SoFiUSD, the first stablecoin issued by a US nationally chartered bank, as a settlement option across its network, as well as a Crypto Partner Program with over 85 firms.
