Cosmos-based Gravity Bridge halts bridge after reported $5.4M exploit
Crypto Insight Summary: Gravity Bridge, a Cosmos-based decentralized bridge enabling cross-chain transfers between Ethereum and Cosmos, was drained of approximately $5.4 million in a suspected signing key compromise. Onchain analyst Specter first flagged the unusual outflows, and security firm PeckShield confirmed the exploit, breaking down the stolen assets as roughly $4.3 million in USDC, 274 Wrapped Ether worth about $553,000, $434,000 in USDT, and 14.164 PAX Gold tokens valued at around $64,000. A portion of the funds was laundered through instant-swap service ChangeNow and Binance, while the theft wallet still held approximately 2,102 ETH (~$4.23 million) at the time of reporting. The Gravity Bridge team acknowledged the incident and instructed validators to halt the bridge, which was subsequently paused. The bridge's native token, Graviton (GRAV), was trading at $0.0007053, down 4% over the past day. This incident marks the eighth major bridge exploit of 2026, bringing cumulative losses from such attacks to $328.6 million. The exploit comes amid heightened concerns about bridge security, with JPMorgan analysts recently flagging it as a major obstacle to DeFi institutional adoption. The gravity bridge uses its full validator set to authorize transfers, making it one of the more decentralized bridge designs Crypto Insight Analysis: Direction: Bearish GRAV / Neutral ETH / Neutral ATOM Impact: Minor Impact Horizon: Short-term (1-3 days) Reasoning: Bridge exploit causes temporary loss of confidence in Gravity Bridge and GRAV token, but broader market impact is limited.
