SoFi Brings Its Bank-Issued Stablecoin to 14.7 Million Members
Crypto Insight Summary: SoFi Technologies has made its bank-issued stablecoin, SoFiUSD, available to its 14.7 million members within the SoFi banking app, marking the first time a U.S. national bank has offered a publicly redeemable stablecoin directly through a consumer banking platform. The token, which launched in December 2025 for enterprise clients, is backed 1:1 by cash held at the Federal Reserve, issued by FDIC-insured SoFi Bank, and operates on Ethereum and Solana. CEO Anthony Noto framed the launch as eliminating the choice between blockchain technology and regulated banking products. SoFi obtained its national bank charter in 2022 through the acquisition of Golden Pacific Bancorp with OCC approval, and updated OCC guidance has enabled its broader crypto push. The consumer rollout follows earlier enterprise partnerships with Cumberland, Bullish, BitGo, B2C2, Fireblocks, Wintermute, Galaxy, Jupiter, Mesh Payments, and Mastercard, as well as a March deal to use SoFiUSD for settlement on Mastercard's network. The total stablecoin market supply has crossed $320 billion, with Tether's USDT holding roughly 58% dominance at a $185 billion market cap, according to DefiLlama. SoFi posted record Q1 2026 results with $1.1 billion in adjusted net revenue, up 41% year-over-year, and membership up 35%, though SOFI stock remains down 39% year-to-date. Upcoming plans include tokenized deposits, 24/7 cross-border transfers, and a SoFiUSD listing on institutional exchange Bullish. The launch comes roughly 10 months after the GENIUS Act was signed into law on July 18, 2025, establishing the first federal framework for payment stablecoins, with implementing regulations due by July 18, 2026. Other traditional financial firms, including Wells Fargo, which filed a "WFUSD" trademark in March, are also exploring stablecoin offerings. Crypto Insight Analysis: Direction: Bullish ETH / Bullish SOL / Neutral USDT Impact: Minor Impact Horizon: Mid-term (1-8 weeks) Reasoning: SoFi's stablecoin launch boosts Ethereum and Solana ecosystems, but USDT dominance remains strong.
